The North Shore Lacrosse Boys’ Varsity League finished up its 9^th season this past Thursday with Homegrown Lacrosse and the Junior Gulls facing off in the championship game for the second consecutive year.

As the first whistle blew, the crowd quieted as the intensity between the two teams radiated off the turf.  Both teams seemed to have shown up to play at a high level with the expectations of bringing home the league championship for their club. The Junior Gulls, the 2010 Boys’ Varsity League champions and number one seed, stepped onto the field with confidence, hoping to defend their title.  However, the number two seed, Homegrown, possessed equal poise and were not ready to leave without a battle and championship title.

The beginning of the game was intense as each team applied pressuring defense, forcing several turnovers and difficulties advancing the ball down the field. The game remained scoreless until Ryan Kennedy, the Championship MVP, intercepted a pass from the Homegrown goalie, returned it into the offensive zone and scored only seconds later. This would be the first of three goals Kennedy would score on the night.

Following the Kennedy goal, Blake Ferry (Homegrown) and Devin Sullivan (Gulls) each added a goal to the scoreboard, followed by ten scoreless minutes. However, with players chasing down every loose ball and missed shot, there was not a moment of leisure or loss of intensity.  Fans’ eyes remained glued to the field, sitting on the edge of their seats as goalies, Mike Warrino (Homegrown) and Evan Connolly (Gulls) made several spectacular saves, finishing with nine and six goals, respectively. 

Leading 3-2 at halftime, the Gulls must have received an inspiring half-time speech by Coach Mike Sciamanna as they jogged back onto the field with an abundance of confidence.  The Gulls dominated the second half, going on a 6-0 scoring run which provided the team with a seven goal advantage.  Homegrown’s Jason Ku, unwilling to accept defeat, scored two quick goals with five minutes to play, followed by another goal by Zack Gentile (Homegrown).  However, there was not enough time for Homegrown to overcome the large deficit they faced.

As the final seconds ticked off the clock, The Jr. Gulls flocked the field to celebrate their 9-5 victory and their second consecutive league title.

Brayden Carney – Team Grizzlies

A Goalie for Team Grizzlies, Brayden Carney was an instrumental contributor to his team. A player who always showed up to play for his team, this incoming freshman at Pentucket High School remained a positive force for the Grizzlies despite the fact they went winless for the 2011 season.  Despite the fact that he played against several players who were vastly older than himself, Brayden seemed to improve every week and almost secured several crucial wins against playoff opponents.

Coach Ian Pickrell stated about Brayden, “Although quiet and reserved, he possesses great skill especially for his age and appears to have unlimited potential for his future.  I look forward to seeing where his lacrosse career will be in four years from now.”

With a future as bright as Carney’s, the rest of the NSL league should respect this rising star.

Matt Muse- Team Beverly

Muse was an all-around standout for Team Beverly during the 2011 season. A force to be reckoned with on the offensive end, Muse always seemed to be in the right place at the right time for his team. Among the league leaders in goals with 13 during the season, Muse made it a mission to ensure that his team would not be out-hustled or out-worked during any game. With a sniper shot and a propensity for finding the open man on the offense, Muse always seemed to be involved with scoring plays for Team Beverly.

Asst. Director Steve Angelo claims about Matt “He was truly fun to watch offensively. He showed up to play for his team every game and he always seemed to come up with every groundball and made it a habit of setting up players on his team with easy scoring opportunities.”

Harry Cwik- Team Masco

Playing on one of the more physical and emotional team in the league, Nobody left more on the field than Cwik. A hard working midfielder for Team Masco, Harry was a force both offensively and defensively for one of the top teams in the league. Though a true competitor, Cwik’s leadership for his teammates is what sets him apart from several of the players in the league.

When asked about Harry’s contribution to his team, Coach Will Doucette stated “Harry Cwik is a hard working midfielder that focuses on the game and is always working hard on the field. As a true leader, he also encourages younger players to get their playing time.”

Kyle Richardson – Junior Gulls

A Blue-Collar, hard working defensemen from Pentucket who always seemed to make big plays for his team when needed. A player who gives it everything he has on every play, Richardson became a difference maker for his team throughout the season. Along with the help from many of his teammates, Richardson led the Jr. Gulls to their second league championship in 2011.

When speaking of Richardson, Coach Mike Sciamanna said “ [Kyle] is a great defenseman who plays hard all the time and continues to improve everygame… he’s a small kid but it never affects how he plays, he plays with a chip on his shoulders. He just loves the game of lacrosse.”
